廃語の風景㉙ ― 行水

『廃語の風景』を書き始めた当初から、いちばん多く廃語になってしまったのは夏の風物詩にある言葉ではなかろうか、という気が何となくしていました。
『徒然草』に、「家の作りやうは、夏をむねとすべし。冬はいかなる所にも住まる」という一節があることは幾度か紹介しました。
そこには、冬の寒さは何としてでも防げるが、夏の暮らしに配慮しない家にはとても住めたものじゃない、といった主張があります。
少しでも暑気をはらうために、古来より日本人は、衣食住の面で様々な工夫を重ねてきました。それがこの国の文化を支える大きな柱ともなってきたのです。

ところが、オフィスや家庭にエアコンが普及するようになってから、夏の暮らしに対する工夫が急速に消えていきました。
スイッチひとつで室内が冷却できるわけですから、「工夫」などする必要がなくなるのも当然です。
そればかりか、風通しよく作られた建物はエアコンにとってはむしろ無駄な存在となるので、密閉性の高い建築様式が採用されるようになってきました。
かくして現代の家屋からは、障子や欄間が姿を消しました。
夏の風物詩から廃語がたくさん生まれる最大の原因は、人が生活の利便性を追求したことにあると考えて、まず間違いはないでしょう。

子供の頃、母は私にときどき「行水」をさせてくれました。
あまり広くない裏庭に盥（たらい）を置き、ぬるめの湯をはって、青空の下で「入浴」するのです。
家に風呂がなかったわけでなく、私も入浴が嫌いな子供ではなかったので、この行水は半分プール遊びのようなものでした。
盥は直径1メートルほどの木製で、もともとは洗濯に使われていたものだと母から聞きました。

現代でもビニールプールに水をはって、家庭で手軽にプール遊びをするのは子供の娯楽として定着していますが、それと行水は、本来似て非なるものです。
プール遊びは文字通り「遊び」ですが、行水はあくまで「入浴」なのです。
今から半世紀以上前の庶民生活では、そんなに贅沢に湯水を使うことはできませんでした。お風呂だって、毎日毎日沸かして入れる家庭は少なかったと聞いています。
だから真夏の炎天下に汗をかいたとき、湯の量も少なくて済む行水は、庶民の楽しみとなっていたわけです。

私が子供の頃に経験した行水は、現代のプール遊びとほぼ同じ意味でした。
それでも湯から上がって新しいシャツに着替えると、風呂上りと同じように気分はサッパリ。三ツ矢サイダーでもあれば最高だったでしょう。
庶民的な暮らしの工夫は、意外にも「贅沢」な気分を味わえる画期性を持っていました。

バスルームでシャワーを浴び、気密性の高い部屋にエアコンをかけて涼むのは簡単ですが、家の裏庭で夏の太陽に裸身を晒しながら入浴するという、あの開放感と贅沢さ加減は、設定温度を下げてキンキンに冷やしただけの部屋の中には決してあり得ないものなのです。

今日はもう11月3日。
２か月間ブログの更新がないのは、本業がお忙しいのでしょうか。相変わらず、頑張っておられるのですね。
中学・高校の同窓会の日ですが、本年度私は欠席です。お目にかかれなくて残念ですが、ブログは時々拝見しています。
たまには、旧友の事を思い出して、一息つく時間を作るのも悪くない年齢になりました。

This is my favorite part of a match up: seeing the players struggle, and the team suffer. There's no better feeling for a good result to get than having a score tied. One of my favorite lines to play from a game. "Who scored? I scored!"

That feeling begins with the first shift in the second period, when Leddy finally gets his feet down. He comes in, gets his pads on and makes a little run. What he does next should have given him the edge over his opposition. But Leddy's first pass has a soft bounce, which takes a little out of the puck to get through the back of the net. He goes for the empty netter, but it bounces off the back of the net.

The third period sees a lot of pressure on the back half of the ice, and it's a real positive. The Flyers are scoring a lot, and they're creating some offense. Leddy sees an opening to put the puck in a good spot, and he's able to score. But the result isn't immediately apparent, and the fact that the crowd is cheering him on. But to hear the screams for joy is a very strange feeling for a team that has lost three straight. It's as if they have found the answer to a long-standing mystery.

After a few of those goals, we really get into the "I know what this is about…" phase. But the Flyers go down to the fourth period with some good scoring from Claude Giroux. It's hard to argue that Leddy is not carrying some points right now. But he has had some trouble finding teammates lately. Leddy and Ovechkin are the only two Flyers forward on this team who actually play at least 20 games per year. The other goal is not to be a player that takes an opposing team out. He needs to take every game personally, and not make the wrong plays.

One thing to watch for after this loss:

Thieves raid darwin sex shop in north Sydney

MANILA, Philippines (JTA) — Hundreds of Muslims from a small area in north Sydney raided a shop on Thursday for clothes and cash, leaving only a handful of victims, police said.

Two shopkeepers had their shops robbed during the attack, the Daily Mail reported on Saturday. Three people were injured in the attack that took place about 9 p.m. on West Gate, near North Sydney Road, in a residential area. A woman was taken to hospital after allegedly being raped.

Police arrested two suspected attackers, and later identified one suspect as 19-year-old Abdolrahim Ibrahim. Police suspect another man was behind the attack because he was a passenger in a black Nissan Maxima.

Ibrahim appeared in court on Saturday and was released after posting $20,000 bail.

Authorities on Saturday called on residents to stay away from the area because of the risks to themselves and others.

A witness told the Daily Mail that there were about 40 people in the shop when the thieves entered. Police said surveillance video showed one man stealing cash and clothing from the shop and throwing them onto the floor in the stairwell.

The attack was reported after an employee of a clothing store called police on Thursday to report the theft of a pair of sweatpants from the store's bathroom stall. A witness also said she saw some of the suspects wearing black masks.

200 firefighters tackling suspicious blue mountains blaze

Firefighters were trying to keep a fire from going out of control in a hilltop residence on the outskirts of Vancouver Island's capital, Vancouver.

The fire started Wednesday night with an electrical fire, burning in what was apparently a backyard, before spreading quickly and destroying two residential properties in an area of wooded hills near Old Main, said RCMP spokeswoman Brigitte Belanger.

Belanger said the fire was likely sparked by light switches being used on a roof-mounted heater that was part of a family's apartment complex. No injuries were reported as of 9 p.m.

The fire spread quickly through the roof area and was moving slowly through the residential property after firefighters arrived at the scene about 8 p.m., Belanger said.

The blaze broke out in a garage behind the complex, where neighbors were watching an infomercial about a mountain lion spotted there.

"A lot of the property was burned out, and so all of the smoke was moving over the roof. There were some structural components coming off of the roof," Belanger said.

The house where the fire started was a single-story four-bedroom brick, four-car garage that featured an entry and an exit, Belanger said.

The fire is considered to be suspicious, though no fire crews have been on the scene, she said.

The blaze is burning near Old Main Station, which is where people who live on the hilltop are allowed to go in the winter to shop or do other activities for the winter.

Residents there said they heard some commotion about 2:30 a.m., then heard an explosion.

"We heard two huge bangs," resident Jim Hill told a news conference Thursday. "There were flames coming out of a chimney, and when we got out it went straight to the next house in the driveway."

The flames had surrounded a wooded area about seven kilometres east of Old Main Station.

Hill went over to a nearby cottage and opened it up for smoke. Hill's neighbour turned out to be a family friend. The fire began on their front lawn, where there was a garage and a wooded area around the cottage.

"The next thing we know, I hear a huge noise and then I see all the flames, and it's full of smoke," Hill said.

He called police as soon as he heard a loud noise.

A local farmer told the Vancouver Sun that he heard one of the residents "say: 'I thought it was going to be a normal house fire,' and then there was a bunch of flames all over the place, up and down the hill."
